Weekly Photo Challenge: Graceful

Whether it’s a person, a building, or an abstract shape, show us something that exists harmoniously with its surroundings.

In October last year we spent a week in Grafton during the annual Jacaranda Festival.  We were camping with friends and enjoyed the immersion into country-town life as they celebrated each day throughout the week of the festival – as they had done since 1934.  The festival was one of the first folk festivals in Australia and centres on the

Inaugurated in 1934, this was the first of Australia’s folk festivals and celebrates the superb spectacle of the lilac-blossomed trees that grow in Grafton’s broad tree lined avenues. It is also the oldest floral festival still celebrated in Australia and avid gardeners willingly open their gardens to the public.

During the last weeks of October and the first few weeks of November the Jacaranda blossoms burst forming a lilac umbrella.  When the time is right the trees shed their blossoms that form the lilac carpets that line pavement and roadsides.  Gorgeous old homes set back from the road nestle against a backdrop of more Jacaranda trees:  they exist in gracious harmony with their surroundings.

  1. I haven’t been to Grafton just at that time of year, though we have passed through there many times.
I love the jacaranda trees wherever I go, but I haven’t seen the wonderful purple lined streets in their full glory. Must do it sometime. Lovely photo, Linda.
