Share Your World – Week 4, 2015

Where did you live at age five?  Is it the same place or town you live now?

I lived in Durban, Natal, South Africa, with my younger brother and our parents.  Moving from place to place was a pattern in my life until I married and settled in one place long enough to feel I had found “home”.  Our children have left home and the MOTH and I now live in yet another town in yet another country, far removed from my home town at five years old.

You are invited to a party that will be attended by many fascinating people you never met.  Would you attend this party if you were to go by yourself?

Me?  Attend a party by myself?  With people I had never met?  Could not imagine anyone being fascinating enough to draw me into such an uncomfortable, for me, set of circumstances.

Did you grow up in a small or big town? Did you like it?

The growing up I actually remember happened in the large city of Johannesburg in South Africa.  Yes, I did like it.  I liked the range of activities to be involved in and the diversity of people one met each day.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Even before the word ‘hippy’ became hip (I am so funny) I wanted to wear flowing clothes and roman sandals and funky boots and braid my hair. I fantasised about roaming the countryside in a gypsy caravan pulled along by draught horses.  The caravan would have been build in the shape of a giant teapot.  It was my preferred mode of transport when imagining I could out run life’s overwhelming moments.  Now that I am grown up I want to be a gypsy roaming the countryside in a teapot shaped caravan pulled by a pair of beautiful draught horses … There seem to be no teapot-modelled gypsy caravans on the market which leads me to think there is a niche market waiting for a creative tradesman to step into (wait till I tell the MOTH).

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week?

The beautiful weather on Saturday gave us plenty of outdoor time last weekend.  The MOTH continued rebuilding the fence and I cleaned up the garden, verandah and patio area.  It rained on Sunday.  I always feel like I’ve ‘won’ when I get a big outside task done and then the weather closes in.

What are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

We haven’t been to the movies for a long time and I am feeling the need to go an see something on the big screen.  The little cinema we go to has a lot of olde worlde charm and they serve coffee or hot chocolate and biscuits before the movie starts.  It is an experience and I always feel like I am stepping back in time.  As soon as the MOTH gets the gypsy caravan workshop up and running we’ll be able to harness the horses to our “teapot” and ride back in time to the movies.
