X Marks the Sweet Spot

We left home to explore Australia in our caravan and find somewhere to live out our twilight years. We were ready for change having lived on the eastern seaboard of New South Wales for fifteen years. Time was not a constraint and so we meandered north then west, turned east and came south again.

Home for the past eleven months

We extended our stays in towns that felt good. The question always: Is this our new home? After five months on the road we found our happy place. The small coastal village of Lake Conjola that registered 436 people in the 2016 census.

Lake Conjola

Local shopping runs to a cafe, post office, newsagent and butcher. There may be a takeaway shop if memory serves me well. But that wasn’t all. A 55+ Lifestyle Village was nearing the end of Phase One of Three of construction. We spent time looking around and shown through several show homes. The rest is history.

We will be on Site 51

The site was raw when we visited. Now our home stands on the corner block we selected complete with driveway and road footings. 30th April may be the last day of the A – Z Blogging Challenge for 2019 but it is the start of the next season of our lives.

Driveway and footings in place

Our furniture arrives in a week and later that week we become village people. The Facebook page is a lively place of social interaction. Friday Happy Hour, Wednesday Craft Morning and Monday Morning Coffee and Cake. A walking group and regular outings are in full swing.

The larger town of Ulladulla has all we need as far as retail and grocery shopping goes. It also has a Men’s Shed where men can do frightfully fun boy stuff and drink lots of tea and eat cakes and slices baked by her indoors.

This resident looks pretty relaxed about things …

As we find our sweet spot in the Lake Conjola community – that has already embraced us via Facebook welcomes and invitations – we will be mindful that we have yet to complete our Big Fat Road Trip around Australia. It will feel strange to be in one place for longer than a week but we will take a break from our travels.

Day Twenty-Four’s post relates to the letter X – which for me is about the sweet spot we have found to live in the next season. This month I am participating in the A – Z Blogging Challenge (2019). Previous posts in this challenge are here.

  1. My parents did something similar in the States. They just drove all around the country and settled in anyplace that seemed comfortable to try it out. They stayed in one place in Texas for six months before moving on. The eventually settled in a small town on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. They’ve been there 8 years now and love it.

I am at Transformed Nonconformist. I usually write humor pieces, but I am getting serious this month. I’m writing about people who have deeply impacted my life.

    • It is a great way to get a feel for a place. Sounds like your parents made the right decision with their home base. We’re hoping to have a similar experience. Certainly very excited about moving in soon. Thanks for the visit and stopping to comment 😊 Linda

  2. Congratulations to you both, Linda. Great place you have chosen. We love the far south coast and always travel that way when we head to Melbourne to catch the ferry to Tassie. We probably won’t be going this year but we will certainly be travelling that way at some time as we have friends and family in the larger coastal area there. Wishing you all the best in your new home. πŸ™‚
