When I come across a new piece of street art in our city I stop to savour the planning, skill and scope of such works. The ability to imagine something and then transfer the image to the extensive canvas of social space, be it a building wall or street fence, boggles my mind.
The city of Newcastle, in Australia, is in a phase of regeneration as the once vibrant city has lost its soul to suburbia and the large shopping malls that draw people away from the heart of the city. Newcastle was ‘discovered’ in 1797 as the second European settlement in Australia so it is not surprising that it is once again in a new stage of metamorphosis which is exciting.
Part of revamping our city has been the emergency of sanctioned street art that captures some of the history as well as sense of fun to help rekindle interest in the state’s largest city, after Sydney.
